Smartphones Have Led, and Desktops Will Follow

So computers are suddenly getting more phonelike.

Microsoft and Apple are leading the charge in this area. On Wednesday, Microsoft took the wraps off its latest operating system for computers and tablets, Windows 8, which mimics the look and feel of the company’s new software for phones. And Apple recently offered a preview of its next operating system for Macs, incorporating familiar elements from the iPhone and iPad.

“All of the major innovation for PCs is coming from the mobile phone,” said Tim Coulling, an analyst at the research firm Canalys.

The companies hope this strategy will give them added leverage in the market for tablets and smartphones, which is growing to rival the market for personal computers. And it could also help them sell more computers or, in Microsoft’s case, software for computers.

People who buy an iPad or iPhone, for example, might be more inclined to also buy a Mac computer if they work together seamlessly and have features that operate the same way on both devices. For Apple, which still has only a small share of the computer business, that could be a big advantage.

In Microsoft’s case, it needs to defend its traditional dominance of the PC operating system business with software that is versatile enough to also run on tablet computers.

This idea of a “continuum of computing” across various devices has long been “a promise of the future,” said Carolina Milanesi, a research analyst who covers the mobile industry for Gartner. “But now it is critical for success among consumers.”

Apple and Microsoft share an enemy in Google, which has the most popular cellphone operating system in Android but does not have a strong presence in software for computers. Part of Google’s strategy is to make up for that by offering sites and services on the Web that tie in with Android devices. This week the company unveiled a version of its Web browser, Chrome, that lets users synchronize their Web searches between their mobile devices and computers.

In the case of Apple’s next version of its computer operating system, called Mountain Lion, Apple has added several features that were previously mobile-only. It has revamped the Mac’s iChat software to be called Messages and made it work with the iMessage texting software in iPads and iPhones.

Mountain Lion, which is due out this summer, will also include Notification Center, a mobile feature that consolidates the cacophony of incoming e-mail messages, chat messages and online friend requests into a single window pane.

With Windows 8, which became available in a preview version on Wednesday, the inspiration Microsoft is drawing from its Windows Phone software for smartphones is striking. Windows 8 uses the same touch-friendly interface that Microsoft uses in Windows Phone. The interface, known as Metro, features a mosaic of tiles that can be tapped to start up applications, and that often spring to life with photos, e-mails and other new content from the Internet.

Windows 8 is intended to run both on tablet devices operated exclusively through a touchscreen and on more traditional computers controlled mainly by a keyboard and mouse. Microsoft executives have promised that the software works equally well either way.

And Windows 8 users will be able to switch from the Metro interface to a more traditional-looking Windows desktop if they wish. Bill Flora, a former Microsoft designer who was involved in creating Metro, said Microsoft needed to give users both options because it does not want to alienate the vast numbers of people who are used to the traditional Windows appearance.

“It’s such a huge aircraft carrier they are trying to move,” Mr. Flora said. “They want to carry people along rather than make a clean break.”

At Microsoft’s event at a mountaintop hotel here, Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows division, described Windows 8 as a “generational change” in how the company views its suite of products because of the way it creates a “unified OS experience across devices.”

Mr. Sinofsky said it was the company’s hope that the new software would dazzle consumers. “It’s an awesome opportunity for us,” he said.

For Microsoft, which still relies heavily on sales of computer software and has not had a hit phone or tablet, this is not just about design. It may be a matter of survival, and the company’s bold moves indicate how much is at stake, analysts said.

“Microsoft can’t compete with Apple using the old version of Windows, so they had to redesign from the ground up,” said Chetan Sharma, an independent wireless analyst.

Apple has 64 percent of the global market for tablets, and Android claims 32 percent, while Microsoft has less than 2 percent, according to recent data from Canalys. When it comes to smartphones, Microsoft has just 1.5 percent, while Apple has 19 percent and Android claims close to half the market.

“The PC is less relevant, and that means so is Windows,” said Michael Gartenberg, an industry analyst with Gartner. “Microsoft has to think about what that means for their future.”

For both Apple and Microsoft, tying together computers and mobile devices sets them up to charge monthly subscriptions for cloud-based services, like data storage, music or movies, that work across devices. “It’s no longer about one screen but access to the collection of services through a collection of screens,” Mr. Gartenberg said.

Down the road, the additional consumer data collected through these services could open up other business opportunities, like offering more precisely targeted ads or mobile coupons.

“They could tie desktop commerce to mobile and tablet commerce,” Mr. Sharma said. “It offers a better understanding of consumer behavior and when to show an ad on a desktop or a mobile device.”

Mr. Sharma added that a broad reach across mobile devices and computers could give these companies better bargaining power when striking deals with content companies for new services.

Both companies have also borrowed the concept of online app stores from the mobile side to create equivalent services for the computer operating systems. These are centralized online services where users browse, buy and download applications. Apple started its Mac App Store over a year ago; Microsoft opened what it calls the Windows Store on Wednesday.

Nick Wingfield reported from Seattle.

10 winners and losers in rise of smartphones

Smartphones are changing the world in more ways than people
realize.

Entire industries are being built up or torn asunder because of
rising ownership and use of smartphones, handheld devices that
offer computing and connectivity far beyond the simple phone
call. How many innovations can say that?

Click on the photo to see the biggest winning and losing
industries from this transformation. Here’s a hint: retail stores
and kiosks that sell mobile phones and bling are on the list.

IBISWorld, a Los Angeles publisher of industry research and
analysis, has released a new study of winners and losers from the
mobile devices that allow people to browse the Web, shop, find
directions, play games, listen to music, watch movies and settle
bar bets in seconds from anywhere.

“Smartphones are becoming increasingly intertwined with people’s
daily lives,” says the report authored by Kevin Culbert and
Caitlin Moldvay. “Whether an industry is helped or harmed by this
trend, smartphone use is on the rise and it’s here to stay.”

The number of mobile Internet connections increased at an
annualized rate of 57.5% to 155.6 million from 2007 to 2012,
IBISWorld estimates. Almost half (46%) of Americans have a
smartphone and 67% of 18- to 29-year-olds.

“Although growth in the number of mobile Internet connections has
started to slow as the market approaches saturation, the ways in
which industries have started to use and leverage mobile
technology has not slowed,” the report says.

While IBISWorld concentrates on specific industries that are
being changed by smartphone usage, these devices are dramatically
changing the way all companies do business. It’s no longer enough
to have a website. It must be maximized for the mobile device.
This reality is even impacting Facebook, which went public on
Friday.

When was the last time you used the land line room phone when you
stayed in a hotel or motel?

When was the last time you used the roadside emergency phone when
your car broke down on the freeway or even saw an enclosed
telephone booth? British Telecom recently put up for sale 60 of
its iconic red telephone booths and thousands have been sold off
since the 1990s.

Do truckers even use CB radios any more?

“As consumers increasingly look to smartphones for everyday
tasks, companies will need to make adjustments to keep up,” the
IBISWorld report says.

BlackBerry 7 smartphones approved for DOD use

Posted by 3 smartphones | Posted in 3 Smartphones | Posted on 20-05-2012

Computerworld - Research in Motion’s BlackBerry 7 smartphones have been approved for use by Department of Defense operations, the company announced.

The DOD approval will enable Army and other U.S. military personnel to utilize several features in the BlackBerry 7, including voice-activated universal search, Near Field Communication, augmented reality and social networking feeds, RIM said on Wednesday.

The DOD decision allows for its personnel to use: the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 smartphones that include both touchscreens and physical keyboards; the BlackBerry Torch 9810 device that has a touchscreen and slide-out physical keyboard; the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 models with a touchscreen; and the BlackBerry Curve 9360 smartphone with its physical keyboard.

The new smartphones were evaluated by the U.S. Army and Defense Information Systems Agency and then listed on DISA’s United Communications Approved Product List.

Meanwhile, RIM announced on Feb. 1 that the U.S National Institutes of Standards awarded FIPS 140-2 certification to the phones.

Scot Totzke, senior vice president of BlackBerry Security, said RIM smartphones have both the FIPS 140-2 certification and the Common Criteria EAL4+ accreditation.

A key component of RIM security for years has been the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, used by businesses and governments to pass sensitive data from wireless smartphones through a secure corporate firewall.

Despite a reputation for strong security, the release of RIM’s latest batch of BlackBerry smartphones has been mostly overshadowed by recent upheaval in the RIM executive suites.

Nonetheless, DoD certification for the BlackBerry 7 phones is “indeed important,” noted analyst Jack Gold of J. Gold Associates.

“Is this a big deal for consumers? No. But for many companies where security is critical, such as in the financial industry, RIM’s message that if it’s good enough for the DoD and other government agencies, it is certainly good enough for you, is amplified.”

RIM’s round of executive changes, primarily made due to a decline in its global smartphone market share and delays in the rollout of its next-generation BlackBerry operating system, BlackBerry 10, include the appointment of new CEO Thorstein Heins in February.

Analysts and IT managers often praise RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server and tradition of strong smartphone security, but have also been critical of the company for its inability to keep up with consumer demands for a smartphone touchscreen and Web browser that can compete with the more popular iPhone and Android smartphones.

An October 2011 near-global outage of important BlackBerry network applications also cost RIM some government and enterprise customers, analysts and customers have said.

The DoD certification of the new RIM smartphones “won’t really affect BlackBerry’s perceived uncoolness for end users, compared to the iPhone and Android,” Gold said. “But it certainly will be reassuring for IT types.”

On Tuesday, RIM announced the appointment of a new Chief Operating Officer, former Sony Mobile Communications executive Kristian Tear, and a new Chief Marketing Officer, former LightSquared official Frank Boulben.

Boulben, who fills a CMO post that’s been vacant for more than a year, is charged with shoring up RIM’s consumer image.

Heins unveiled the important BlackBerry 10 platform on May 1, but didn’t say when the smartphones that run it will ship. An early fall launch is considered crucial for RIM’s future.

Smartphone Boom Drives Market in Hybrid Processors

Posted by 3 smartphones | Posted in 3 Smartphones | Posted on 19-05-2012

Hybrid processors that include two or more types of core now account for half of the $111 billion processor market, driven by growth in smartphones and tablets, according to new research by IMS Research.

The most common type of hybrid processors combine a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU). These processors are particularly suited to use in smartphones and tablets, which need to deliver high performance and HD graphics from within a compact form factor.

AMD and Intel have been developing hybrid processors to compete for PC market share since 2010, but a number of mobile processor vendors including NVidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments have also started offering heterogeneous application-specific processors with a microprocessor core and integrated GPU.

Now that smartphone sales exceed PCs, and tablets are gaining popularity, the demand for hybrid processors is growing. IMS Research has identified 20 processor vendors that provide heterogeneous processing solutions on a single chip, and values the market at over $55 billion.

According to Tom Hackenberg, semiconductors research manager at IMS Research and author of the Comprehensive Processor Report, the need for hybrid processors will only become more urgent as semiconductor providers reach the physical limits of Moore’s Law.

“This hybridisation is getting even more competitive with an Intel Atom-based smartphone on the market this month, demonstrating that Intel is serious about entering the mobile device market by combining an x86 microprocessor, graphics licensed from NVidia and configurable security logic as a hybrid processor triple play to capture share,” he said.

Hackenberg said that the extremely high volume of single chip microcontrollers (such as smart cards) means that hybrid solutions are unlikely to overtake single core solutions in volume any time soon. However, higher performance device demands will continue to push the market further toward hybrid processors.

Meanwhile, some chip vendors are turning their attention to configurable processors that can deliver application-specific cores. For example, Intel’s Z2460 mobile processor includes a configurable security engine, and Analog Devices’ BF60x DSP includes configurable logic to accelerate vision applications.

“If processor suppliers are going to continue meeting performance expectations set by Moore’s Law, clearly this is a necessary trend,” said Hackenberg. “Future processors may be less marketable by their top-end frequency and more by their application specific cores.”
